Overcoming inequality and poverty- Creating a Better Future
In this post I am writing about overcoming inequality and poverty and creating a better future. It must begin by making some questions: why is life on Earth so hard, so difficult for most people? Why is it so hard to survive, to raise a family and educate our children? Why is it that nothing seems to get better and only worse, on this planet?
In their inner knowing, people know that it shouldn’t be that way, that life on this planet should be much easier and happier than it is. But most don’t dare to make these questions. And, without making the questions, the answers don’t appear, and we only see the passivity of the ones believing that «this is how life on Earth has always been, we are powerless to change this».
It is not so, there is something that we can do, and the first thing is to be aware of some causes for poverty and hardships of life on Earth and strive to transform our pessimistic views.
In Earth’s History, there Always Have Been a Power Elite Exploiting the Population
As far as recorded history allows us to go back, we always find a small group of the population that took power and exploited most of the population. The means they used varied, including religion, and the claim to be “special beings” (related to the divinity, having ‘blue blood’, being special intermediaries between human beings and God(s), etc.)
For millennia, humanity allowed itself to be enslaved and exploited by this small predatory elite that lived in luxury and leisure, at the expense of those who produced all the necessary goods. One of the extreme examples, in medieval times, feudalism, demonstrates this: people who were born into a family on the ‘gleba’ were slaves to the lord, having no rights, and not even being able to marry or have children if the feudal lord was so decided.
Many of us like to believe that, today, humanity has made great progress in achieving rights and well-being. The French Revolution, with its ideologues, despite its bloody nature, brought some fundamental values and the noble idea that there is a set of rights that cannot be alienated under any circumstances, to any individual, because, without these, no one is truly ‘human’.
But, although such ideals contributed decisively to the emergence of the democracies we see in the world today, the so-called ‘small elite’ that has dominated the world for so long has not disappeared. It has put on new clothes and is now a force in the economic dimension, controlling the world’s available wealth. Therefore, it continues to ‘reign’.
Unavoidable Facts about Wealth and Poverty in the World
To demonstrate the existence of an elite that today continues to dominate the world through the financial area, let us look at a renowned report – The Oxfam report – produced periodically before the World Economic Forum conference.
Based on data from the Credit Suisse bank for October 2015, it states that 1% of the world’s population has the wealth equivalent to that of the remaining 99% in 2016. This report also states that the 62 richest people in the world have more wealth than 50% of the world’s poorest population.
The same report in 2018 refers to that in 2017 there was a ‘historic’ increase in the number of multimillionaires. 80% of all wealth produced was appropriated by 1% of the population.
In the report “Reward work, not wealth”, the Oxford Commission to Combat Hunger (Oxfam, the English acronym for the confederation of 17 non-governmental organizations) states that half of the world’s population did not retain any of that wealth. »
Furthermore, the report states that “the wealth of billionaires has increased by 13% per year on average since 2010, six times more than the increases in wages paid to workers (2% per year).”
And nowadays, 2025, has there been any improvement in the quality of life of most populations, and in inequality? Unfortunately, not: the report “Takers not Makers – the unjust poverty and unearned wealth of colonialism”, on global wealth inequalities and the growing gap between the (super) rich and poor. Billionaires’ wealth increased three times faster in 2024 than in 2023, totaling $2 billion in 2024, equating to their fortunes increasing by $2 million per day. This situation allowed the creation of 204 new billionaires.
At the same time, according to the World Bank, the number of people living in poverty (living on less than six euros and 66 cents a day) – around 3.6 billion – has changed little since 1990. This number represents 44% of humanity, and the fact that the richest 1% own 45% of all wealth worldwide is disturbing.
The Oxfam and Development Finance International report on the Commitment to Reducing Inequality Index 2024 reveals negative trends in most countries since 2022, when it comes to reducing inequality.
Therefore, the harsh reality is shocking and it will only change if the majority decides that ‘enough is enough’, that we want more equality, we want a fair and equal distribution of the wealth produced, we want a government that defends the interests and well-being of the majority and not of a small elite that takes advantage of the work and resources produced by the majority
A revolution of consciousness in Humanity is Necessary
I Return to the initial question: why is life so difficult for most people on this planet? Most people today no longer attribute the difficulties they go through to God or ‘sin’ or ‘bad luck’. But many feel powerless and say they ‘can’t do anything’ to change this state of things because, after all, ‘it’s always been like this’.
Dear reader, it wasn’t ‘always like this’, despite everything, many living conditions on Earth have improved in recent centuries. They got better because people shouted ‘enough!’ and changed their conscientiousness, taking responsibility for their lives.
The democracies that emerged in the world only happened because there were, in the countries where they were implemented, enough people determined to have a say in the conduct of the government by political power, life in society and in the defense of human rights.
If the majority refused to participate in political decisions and life in society, many would continue to live under a dictatorship or some other form of autocratic government.
External reality reflects the collective consciousness: if it projects the will and conscious determination for a better life, and if each person assumes the responsibility of taking part in society’s decisions, society will inevitably change by creating a better future.
As we can see in the reports, there is an obscene difference between the wealth and privileges of the elite and most people, but no poor person is considered the property of another – at least legally – nor does anyone have a master to decide everything that person does, or can do, as in feudal times.
The main problem today is that there are a large number of people who prefer to passively accept that others decide for them- as can be seen by the recent increase in authoritarian governments- instead of taking responsibility for being part of the ones who choose the life they want to have and they decide to be part of a society they want to be more egalitarian, by creating a better future.
In democratic countries where people are more aware of their rights and participate socially, what can be done is to be alert to all threats to democracy and not allow those who want to destroy it to do so, in order to continue enjoying the benefits and their privileges over those who produce this wealth: they use the power to vote and democratic discussion of problems that affect society to prevent abuse of power by the elite.
Those who elect authoritarian leaders, well, are free to do so, until they finally get fed up, and say ‘enough’ to a life of misery and suffering.
Since Earth is an environment shared by all humanity, the changes that are carried out by people living in democratic countries and accept transcending their consciousness will ultimately influence the global collective consciousness, leading to better general conditions of life on this planet.
Because all human beings deserve a better life than conflicts, war, poverty, all the insanity that a small elite has perpetuated until now due to selfish purposes.
The time has come to start demanding that governments have as their fundamental objective the well-being of the entire population and not the privileges and wealth of small elites.
