The External Self Cannot Achieve Salvation

external self identity

In this post I write about why the external self cannot achieve salvation, based on the teachings of Master More[1]. And the first statement I want to make from His teachings is that we can’t follow the spiritual path without being creative if we accept that the fundamental purpose of the spiritual path is liberation from the cycle of rebirth and ascension.

In Master More’s words: Ascension is a creative process»[2].  But, as I wrote in a previous post, we must shift our consciousness from the external self or ego to the spiritual self or «conscious you» to achieve this. Because the external self cannot achieve salvation.

This shift is only possible through the process of transformation of our sense of identity.   If we are identified with the external self, we cannot ascend.

External Self Looks for Salvation by Performing Rituals and Obeying Rules

Because the external self, or ego, was born from the mind of separation, in interactions with Earth, it can only «look outside», to the world of form. It has no ability to look to itself and change itself by an internal process that is more than merely psychological.

The external self can’t partake of the spiritual identity although this one can identify with the external self, as happened since a long time ago to most human beings incarnating on Earth.

We can learn about this process In Mother Mary’s book Expressing your Love for Life[3]:«Your container of self originally contained only the Conscious You and your I AM Presence (…). The mortal self was created by you. (…) As your mortal self gained strength, its gravitational pull became stronger, and the Conscious You, your attention, was drawn to focus more and more on that mortal self. At some point your mortal self became so strong that the Conscious You began to identify itself with it.«[4]

This excerpt is quite clear and expressive about the creation of the external self and the process that led to the identification of the spiritual self with the mortal human self.

This happened by a decision made by each of us, when we decided to enter in the separate mind.  And, since we are free beings, only we can change this original decision, making a new decision, after we are consciously aware of what the original decision was and what belief it was based on.

That’s why the idea of many religions of an external savior saving us, is an illusion. There is no other path to “salvation” than taking responsibility for our own decisions and actions and deciding to make new decisions that have better results than the previous ones.

When we are consciously aware of our inner identity and accept to transform our  sense of identity , detaching ourselves from the external self we are, in this process, being our own saviors, with the help of our Masters, always available to help us and to guide us until we have developed  enough connection with the I am Presence and the Christ consciousness in us, the Conscious you.

The external self, as we see in most religions and some pseudo spiritual groups on Earth, tries to find an alternative path to «salvation», where there is no need to change our sense of identity and all we must do is to do some rituals several times a day, but this is an illusion because the external self cannot achieve salvation.

The external self-focus on giving decrees or invocations in a certain way, defining the «right way to do it», the «right number oi times», the «the right tone of voice», etc., and don’t worry about internalizing what the decrees or invocations really are saying: I a few words, it is focused on form but despises the content.

And this is an illusory path because what is needed, when giving a decree or invocation, is to look inside, beyond words, because it is when we do this that we go beyond the mortal self and connect to our spiritual identity, becoming more and more connected to it, as we perform the action. This is what helps us to experience what the words are saying and go beyond the intellectual mind.

It is not the mere act of saying the words that produces the effect of the invocations and decrees, it is the experience they potentially provide, by helping us to reconnect to our spiritual identity. And it is this connection that really helps us to transform, gradually, our sense of identity.

And the same can be said of other rituals such as following established rules that define opposing standards such as ‘good’ and ’bad’ ‘right’ and ‘wrong, etc.; and also, some rituals like making ‘offerings’ to a Master or God, to bargain the fulfillment of some desire, attending temples, etc. All this does not give automatic salvation, because salvation is a conscious process of self-mastery or transformation.

By giving invocations and decrees we can, effectively, progress immensely in the spiritual path, but only if we learn to shift out awareness from the mind that «looks outside»- the ego- to the mind that looks inside- the conscious you, our spiritual mind that represents the Christ in us.

And, as I stated above, the external self or ego, can never look inside. It can give the appearance of looking inside, because it is connected to the 4 material bodies. But it can never have a real spiritual experience.

Let’s go back to Mother Mary’s book, about the external self: « This accelerated the power of your mortal self until it managed to convince the Conscious You that you are a mortal being. This happened because the mortal self was no longer a passive force but was truly an invader who was seeking to control your sphere of self by controlling the ruler of that sphere, namely the Conscious You. »[5]

This is truly the drama that most human beings on Earth are facing. Even among spiritual people, they believe that they are living their lives as spiritual beings, but everything they do is through their mortal self, who fights frantically to ensure its survival and does not want to give up control over the spiritual identity.

Detachment from the Ego is the First Stage of spiritual Path

The first step of our spiritual path is indeed to accept that we let, as Mother Mary says, an invader – the mortal self – take control over us.

When we did this, we reversed the order of creation: we were created as spiritual beings to assume dominion over the material world. However, when the ego took control over our spiritual identity, the spirit subjected itself, by our decision, to what is inferior to it, the mortal mind.

And we are the only ones who can reverse this by making the decision to regain control of our life through our identity, as immortal spiritual beings. And only if we take this decision and change ourselves accordingly can we really follow the spiritual path, because the external self cannot achieve salvation, only our spiritual self can.

The Ego can impersonate the spiritual self, but it will never become the spiritual self. It can only grow in the sense of separation and pride, egotistical pride, it can never experience the spiritual consciousness, that is truly a consciousness of wholeness of life, the oneness of Christ Consciousness.

Many people over the centuries have been deceived by this false path of salvation led by the outer self by an obedience to rules and rituals. But no one attained the most desired salvation, through these patterns and external obedience to rules, since the external self cannot achieve salvation.

And I finish by repeating Master Mores’s words: “you cannot ascend by obeying rules»[6] We ascend by being creative and using the will and power within out spiritual self, the one who can ascend and achieve salvation.
