The Origin of Doubt in the Garden of Eden
In this article I will write about the origin of doubt in the Garden of Eden and why doubt is an obstacle to spiritual growth.
The Temptation of Eden – the origin of doubt in the Garden of Eden
Master Maitreya writes in his book[1] that, a long time ago in the 4th sphere (we live in the 7th sphere or universe) some beings rebelled against God’s plan for creation.
These beings were from the first three spheres and held high positions; they didn’t fall because they were inexperienced, but because of pride: they had become proud of their own abilities and, although they had not ascended, they believed they knew better than the Creator how “the world should work”.
They objected to God giving free will to the newly created beings because they had a limited level of consciousness and could make mistakes. So the rebels thought that if the newly created beings did not have freedom, they could not fall or be lost.
Of course, this shows a total misunderstanding of the purpose of creation: the fallen beings did not understand that the Creator had to give the newly created beings freedom to grow in consciousness by making choices, which would only be possible if they were free.
But in their rebellion against God, the fallen beings decided to take with them all the beings they could, to prove God wrong and it is in this context that we can understand the Biblical story of the temptation in the Garden of Eden and origin of doubt in the Garden of Eden.
Master Maitreya tells the story, remembering the words given by the representative of God in the Garden: « If you eat the fruit of knowledge of good and evil (this ‘fruit’ is a symbol for the duality consciousness) surely you will die».
And it is at this moment that the serpent that was in the garden tempts Eve. The serpent is a symbol of the fallen beings who, after the Fall, were also in the Garden to receive guidance if they wished, to give them the opportunity to return to the Laws of God.
But the ‘serpent’ did not want to receive help, what it wanted was to divert as many of the newly incarnated beings as possible into the consciousness of separation and duality.
So, they whispered in their ears: «No, you will not die, but you will become like God, defining good and evil».
Now we had the following situation: on the one hand we had the Master who oversaw these beings and who had told them that “they would certainly die if they ate of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil”.
And on the other hand, we had the “serpent” who said that not only would they not die, but they would be “as gods” defining good and evil.
And finally, we had the new and inexperienced beings who faced the temptation and felt a sense of doubt: “What if God deceived them and the serpent was right»?
What caused doubt in the temptation of the serpent in the garden?
Doubts arose in these new beings because of their limited level of consciousness which accepted doubt: what if the Master, if God, is deceiving them? What if God was lying to them?
We can even note that the Bible says ‘they were cast out of the Garden, they didn’t die! So, did the Master die in the Garden? We must go beyond appearances to find out.
In fact, the Master of the Garden was not lying, because for one reason the experiment with the separate or duality consciousness was not to take place until the newly created beings had been given some preparation by the Teacher, and this had not yet taken place.
For another reason, it is true that after experimenting with duality consciousness without preparation, there was a serious risk that the new beings would get lost in it without being aware of what was really happening, because in identifying with the separate self they would lose the connection with the spiritual self.
The duality consciousness, experimented with without the previous preparation given by the Masters, had a terrible consequence, which was the loss of connection with the spiritual identity, the only one that is immortal, so the Master of the Garden was right when He said that they would die – their spiritual sense of identity would die.
So, what does this sense of doubt mean? One conclusion we can draw is that any created being, because it has freedom, can go against God’s purpose and try an alternative path, as the previous fallen beings did in the previous spheres.
This is not something the Creator didn’t preview, and that’s why it created the Christ mind as the safety mechanism to unite anything that is divided in creation and allow every being to return to the path of life if he chooses so.
But we must not forget that doubt arises only in the consciousness that has left the unity of the Mind of Christ and entered into separation.
As Master Kuan Yin says about doubt: “(…) I said that fear springs from doubt, but doubt springs from a limited sense of identity. I said that fear comes from doubt, but doubt comes from a limited sense of identity”.[2]
When we follow the path of self-mastery and reconnect with our spiritual identity, we also access the oneness of the Christ-mind and transcend all doubt.
One might ask why, at the time of the trauma that created the original self, the conscious you – the spiritual identity – did not help us to overcome doubt, and the answer is that the level of consciousness of the beings who suffered the birth trauma was lower than it is now.
Today, we are no longer newly incarnated beings who have had a shattering experience to which we were unable to react in any other way. We have lived many lives, since then, we have started again on the path back to our true identity.
Therefore, although many of us still need to transcend the self that limits our freedom to be, we have much more capacity to recognize in the attacks of external forces that we are more than this self that is afraid of dying, that has a compulsive need to control everything around it.
This self is not capable of changing or transforming. But we are, because our identity is that of being spiritual beings, driven by the desire to be more.
And to ‘be more’ is also to choose to let the original -self die and with it all doubt and all temptation to explore the experiences of the Anti-Christ. When we do this, we will overcome what caused the origin of doubt in the Garden of Eden.
