We Need to Expand Our Sense of Self
In this post I am going to wite about the need to expand our sense of self, to be free and creative. We can believe that we are free beings, but our freedom depends on our vision to see the possibilities available. The narrower our sense of self, the less possibilities we can foresee. Expanding our sense of self is also a quality of the 1st ray.
The Purpose of Creation
In the last pages of His book, The Mystical Initiations of Power[1] Master More tells us, in a simple manner, how the Creator of our world began the process of creation, by making a choice: “I Will create». The desire to create happened because the creator wanted to be more. And by creating, the Creator also expanded its sense of self.
This choice implied that the Creator could see the infinite possibilities to create and, from all possibilities available, chose a set of them, according to its vision. It would not be possible to manifest all possibilities in a world of form, at once, since everything in the world of form is, by definition, finite.
The world of form is made of differentiation, that means, each form has limits, that distinguish it from other forms, it has a beginning, and an ending, since it develops within the coordinates of space and time.
The creator chose the best possible set of possibilities, using the divine will- the desire to create- and the divine power- the consciousness and the ability to generate a very complex world. But furthermore, this choice was made from Love, that is an expanding flame.
When the Creator used its own being to create the substance that would become the world of form, this is what the mystical tradition calls the« out-breath of God». In other words, it is the Creator’s being manifesting itself in a differentiation from itself, giving birth to «other beings», with unique individualities.
We can say that this «out-breath» of God happened because the Creator, besides the desire to create and be more, wanted to give birth to other beings, with the potentiality of becoming creators and Gods themselves, by growing in awareness and returning to their origin in the Alness of the Creator.
This process will take a very long time because the new beings have only a «point-like» of divine consciousness and must make their way back to the Creator, by expanding their initial limited consciousness until they eventually reach the Creator’s level of consciousness, by expanding their sense of self.
This return is the «in-breath» of God: by exercising Freedom, Will and Power within the frame of the Christ consciousness, the consciousness of belonging to the whole of life, to recognize, at every step of the journey, that we are more than what our limited self can see at any time in the process.
The New created Beings have a Limited Sense of Self
We know, from the Masters teachings, that any newborn life stream has a limited sense of identity, being at the 48th level of consciousness at the beginning.
In the incarnation process is created a sense of self, necessary to interact with the environment of Earth, a temporary identity, created only to be the mediator between the spiritual self and the material realm.
The newly created beings are moved by the desire to be more, to expand their sense of self, like the creator.
Every new being must use his/her power and will, associated with freedom, to expand that sense of self – from the 48th (the beginning) to the 96th level, where it is necessary to take a leap and recognize that the sense of self that brought us until this point is only temporary, because it is a mortal self, and our true self is spiritual and beyond the matter realm.
At the 96th level, the phase of identification with the temporary -self, created in the world of form in the descent to the 1st incarnation, should ideally end, and the phase of returning to the spiritual identity , going from the 97th to the 144th level of consciousness, ideally would begin, by gradually dismantling the human identity.
At the 96th level, there is an important initiation that each one must face, if we choose to go through the last earthly stage on the path, gradually recognizing that we are not the physical body, we are not the emotional body, we are not the mental body, we are not the sense of identity that we have carried with us since the moment we descended into the world of form.
What we must recognize, in summary, is that our true being is not the 4 material bodies nor the sense of identity associated to these material bodies- that is, the external self, or ego, we are spiritual beings, preparing to graduate from the sojourn in the world of form and ascend to the spiritual realm, from which we came.
From the Descent to the World of Form to the Return to the Spiritual Realm
Between the descent to the world of form – the immersion phase of the spiritual growth – to the ascension to spiritual Realm, and after having experimented in the world of form, we have a more or less long period of awakening, until we are ready to return to the spiritual realm.
Along this very long period, we have the process of expanding our sense of self. Of course, we also can narrow down our sense of self, when we decide to identity with the mortal identity, born and developed in the world of form.
The purpose of creation is that every being expands his/her sense of self using the will, power and freedom they received from the Creator. But since Freedom is the most fundamental quality the creator gave us, we can go against God’s laws and choose to rebel against God’s plan, like the «fallen beings» did, identifying with the material sense of identity and refusing to grow and return to our spiritual identity.
This is allowed, exactly because we were created free. But this choice can’t stand forever, because nothing in the world of form lasts forever. However, there is no punishment from the Creator to the disobedient beings, that can have a very long period to experiment with going against God’s laws for the universe.
Those who make this choice pay a price for it, because they stop growing and stop expanding their sense of awareness. The sad thing to remark here is that they can’t really acknowledge that this also limits their freedom, because it narrows their vision and, by this fact, the «possibilities» they can see are reduced.
These beings fell in a higher sphere, so they see themselves as superior to human beings because they came from a higher world. But they fail to see that their vision is very limited, they can only choose what they can see and there are many possibilities that they can’t see, veiled by their level of consciousness.
It is said that these beings fell because they didn’t agree with God giving freedom to the new created beings, by the reason, they argue, that this gave them the possibility of falling and they saw this as a flaw in the creator’s plan. In this argument there is a misunderstanding of what Freedom is. The fall is, in part, a consequence of not grasping what Freedom is about.
Also, they forgot the fact that they didn’t had the level of consciousness of the Creator, they were – though in a higher sphere- material beings, non-ascended beings, therefore they hadn’t expanded their sense of self nor of their consciousness.
But they took the level of consciousness they were at that time as the ultimate and absolute, believing they already knew all there is to know, in their pride and hybris, they believed they were at the same level of consciousness of the Creator, therefore, they thought they knew better than God.
This is the clear example of beings failing resoundingly the important initiation of the 96th level of consciousness.
We Can Only Choose the Possibilities that We Can See
The example of hybris of the fallen beings is, for any human being on Earth, comparable with the belief that we can «understand everything» with our linear intellectual mind, born on Earth.
The desire to explain everything by intellectual means, be it science, philosophy or any other «clever arguments», is and hindrance to all spiritual students that want to expand their sense of self.
The linear intellectual mind is the dominant mind for all who are below the 96th level of consciousness on Earth. And until we learn to silence that mind, from time to time, to open ourselves up to the intuitive consciousness or the Christ mind, there will not be an expansion of consciousness within us.
And why is this important? Well, it is extremely important, because we will not see the real possibilities of our spiritual being. Like I described in another post, the intellectual or ego mind can only look outward to the “objects” of external experience, it cannot look inwards to experience the Christ mind.
Now, lacking the ability to look “inside”, is synonyms of not being able to see any possibilities of the spiritual being. In this state of mind we can only fathom an external path, made by rules and rituals and convince ourselves that we are growing and maybe we are even at the last levels of growth, when, in fact, we are stuck in the trap of the ego, believing that we are expanding our sense of self.
